T5W: 2017 Debut Authors!

Alright, you guys, it’s time for my second ever Top 5 Wednesday! If you would like more information on this project, you can click here to be taken to the Goodreads group page. Essentially, there is a new topic every single Wednesday to post your top 5 of.

The topic this week is: 2017 Debuts You Are Excited For
–There is already a ton of hype for well established authors, but here is an opportunity to discuss some debut (new) authors and showcase their books.

Okayyy. So, I had a bit of trouble with this one. I actually was going to skip this week, because I have literally three entire books to read, finish, and review before I go back to school next Monday. However, since I started my new book twitter and have been following a ton of amazing, diverse bookish people, I have been introduced to some new great authors. Sooo, two of the books on this list are from my Anticipated Books of 2017 list, but the other three are ones I haven’t mentioned on this blog yet.

Let’s get started, shall we?

Dreadnought by April Daniels

First off, we’ve got a book that I heard about from the huge #ReadDiverse2017 movement on Twitter. This one is about a transgender girl named Danny Tozer who inherits some superpowers. She is trying to hide the fact that she’s transgender, but when she gets these powers, her body transforms into the body she’s always wanted. She then has to deal with both being a superhero AND coming out as trans. I’m so excited about this debut because there are so few books with trans main characters, and I can’t wait to read & review this one. I was actually provided an advanced reader copy by the publisher, so I’m planning on reading this one in the next coming days. Look out for my review!

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo

This is a book that was on my 2017 Anticipation post. Stay With Me is a novel from a debut Nigerian author about a woman living in Nigeria who cannot have children, and the stress that causes on her marriage. I’ve actually already started this one, since I received and advanced copy of it from the publisher as well! I can’t wait to finish and post a review of this one for you guys too.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

So this one is a bit of a cop-out in a couple of ways. First of all, I put it on my 2017 post. Second, this is an author who has written some pretty popular stuff, although it was all short fiction. This is his first novel. But I’m justifying all of this because this is literally my most anticipated book of 2017 and I really just want to put it in another post. Anyway, this book is about Abraham Lincoln visiting his son’s gravesite. The Goodreads summary reads: “Set over the course of that one night and populated by ghosts of the recently passed and the long dead, Lincoln in the Bardo is a thrilling exploration of death, grief, the powers of good and evil, a novel – in its form and voice – completely unlike anything you have read before.” Basically I am so excited for this.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Okay, I know, every book blogger reading saw this coming from a mile away. It’s pretty much on everyone’s list this year. Caraval is about an elaborate 5-night game that centers around trying to find the main character’s missing sister. I think it will be Hunger Games-esque, and I LOVE the Hunger Games. I’ve heard really good things about this one, of course, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

This is, hands-down, one of the most anticipated books of the year. It’s inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. The main character witnesses her friend being unjustly murdered by the police, and embarks on a search for justice. The book comes out on February 28th of this year and the rights to the movie have already been sold to Fox. This is gonna be a huge one, y’all. We should all pick it up.

Alright, that’s about it for this week’s Top 5 Wednesday! Let me know which debuts you’re excited for in the comments, and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter.

Much love,
